Important trends for Digital Marketing in 2017 – 2018

The digital world and technological developments are moving at an unfathomable pace, and marketers are by necessity continuing to develop new tactics and techniques to target their market segments. Amahl Williams  a marketing executive and Forbes contributor outlines a few trends he believes will be increasingly salient as the year progresses.

Social Media Marketing

Amahl argues that the ROI for social media marketing is continuing to increase, and therefore a logical strategy for modern marketers to employ. I certainly have seen brands increase their expenditure on targeted campaigns on Facebook with high ROI, furthermore, I have watched brands on Instagram continue to run influencer campaigns and see explosive growth using this method. Social media marketing if done correctly, continues to be an efficient and cost-effective method for targeting consumers and users globally.

Video Marketing

Video marketing is a form of content marketing and can foster high-engagement rates with your target market and audience. Amahl believes this is an important aspect of future digital marketing strategies and tactics, and he uses the example of a YouTube vlogger who straps a GoPro to his pet dog. The vlogger wanted to record the activities of his dog at home while he was away, he uploaded the video to YouTube and the film went viral. This is an example of a low-cost production, yet a medium which was able to reach and engage and audience so vast and wide.

Another great example of the reach and efficiency of video marketing is the digital media company Prager University, which produces a range of short videos on politics, philosophy, economics and history with a conservative angle. Prager Universities’ motto is “short videos, big ideas” and they aim to keep their audience highly engaged by providing content which is informative, clear and concise. Adding to this, they ensure the length of their video content is relatively short around 5 or 6 minutes to keep the audiences attention. Here is a link below to a video by Prager University on their strategies to ensure their content remains relevant and engaging.

There’s a lot of platforms out there that help us with such things as social networks and video marketing like Facebook and YouTube which a lot of marketers turn to. I think a growing trend is the convergence of different areas of digital media (instant messaging, video sharing and streaming, etc.) into one giant platform or site that users can access. For example, ‘Facebook Watch’ – think YouTube blended with Netflix and Vine run on Facebook. They’ve already started trials for this new feature but this is on top of what the already have – instant messaging, stories (like Snapchat) and various other features. I’m not too sure how I feel about it though. I’d rather access my social media and all on the various different apps I know best.

Yes true, there seems to be a significant amount of convergence across digital platforms etc. however if one platfrom does something significantly well they can then remain or become the market-leader much easier. Having said that the idea of convergence is to simplify the UX, thus creating a more beneficial UX. Somethings just won’t work though, based on previous associations of the brand or platform usage.

  2. Hi Eddie, I think that the video marketing strategy is very effective as without the use of visual, digital marketing will surely be less effective!

Totally agree, it is very visual and engages all the senses, I think this is certainly the way of the future, especially for brand specific firms. The success of certain platforms shows just how effective video marketing as a form of content marketing can be.

    Nice post~
There are many suggestions regarding future digital marketing trends, including live streaming, augmented reality, virtual reality and etc. But it seems that they mostly focus in providing richer content, more visuals and instantaneous communication.

Very true, I think given the rise in VR I can really see it being a very good tool to enhance video marketing for a whole range of industries and sectors.

I definitely think the biggest trend would be live streaming, people can’t get enough of feeling like they are apart of their own reality show and connecting to the company on such an interpersonal level.

Yes, this is correct and it really plays into peoples fascination and curiosity, definitely how the market for reality TV in america took off.

  7. Honestly, I think video marketing has to be one, if not the most important trend to take advantage of. With how short people’s attention spans are these days, you need something that instantly catches their eye!

very true, its also much more engaging than text

Social media marketing is a must in 2017. People are looking for honest reviews about products etc as more people tend to search transparent reviews/comments and less marketing ones.

Absolutely, and trust in advertising and marketing is at an all time low, compared to what it was in the past.

I think social media marketing becomes the most important element in nowadays marketing because nearly each person use their own social media and social media can gain a lot attention from customers in a short time!

    1. Eddie Amiet

Yeah spot on, its also relatively cost-effective to
